23 May 2008 – Calgary, AB

The Calgary Ultimate Association (CUA) is pleased to announce VC Ultimate as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2008 Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC2008), set for August 14-17, 2008 in Calgary, AB.

“VC Ultimate is a great fit for the Canadian Ultimate Championships,” said Dave Mclean, CUC2008 Tournament Chair. “They’ve been outfitting ultimate players for more than a decade and we’re pleased to partner with VC to host the biggest and best Ultimate tournament in Canada.”

VC Ultimate was created in Montreal in 1998 to fill a void in the market for Ultimate Frisbee apparel. As Presenting Sponsor, VC will be on-site at CUC2008 selling custom event jerseys, discs, hats, and other Ultimate apparel.

“VC is proud to support one of Canada’s fastest growing sports, and to showcase our Canadian-made performance gear to the country’s best players,” said Adriana Withers, Founding Director of VC Ultimate.

The CUA is organizing CUC2008, which is expected to draw thousands of elite Ultimate players to Calgary from across Canada.

Calgary Ultimate Association and Kidsport Join Forces To Support Youth In Sport PDF Print E-mail

16 May 2008 – Calgary, AB

The Calgary Ultimate Association (CUA) has partnered with the Kidsport Society of Calgary to help put frisbees in the hands of Calgary youth and showcase the 2008 Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC2008) in Calgary, August 14-17, 2008.

"We're excited to join with Kidsport in promoting the sport of Ultimate to a new generation of players," said Dave McLean, CUC2008 Tournament Chair. "Calgary will be hosting more than 1,000 elite Ultimate players this August, including more than 100 of Canada's best junior players, so this is an excellent opportunity to generate some local youth excitement about the sport."

The Kidsport Society of Calgary helps youth overcome the financial obstacles that often prevent some young people from playing sports. Laila Adam, Regional Manager with the Kidsport Society of Calgary, says the partnership with the CUA is a great fit for introducing youth to Ultimate. "Ultimate is a perfect sport for youth because its a wonderful combination of fun, physical activity, teamwork and sportsmanship," said Adam. "With the help of the Calgary Ultimate Association, Kidsport can hopefully engage more youth in Calgary's junior Ultimate scene."

Kidsport will be onsite at CUC2008 promoting their programs and speaking at the event finals, held on Sunday, August 17 at the Calgary Rugby Union (9025 Shepard Road SE). Following the national tournament, the CUA will donate equipment and cash to the Kidsport Society of Calgary.

Calgary Wins Bid For 2008 Nationals PDF Print E-mail
Calgary will be at the centre of a national spotlight next summer as our city hosts the 2008 Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC). The Calgary Ultimate Association (CUA) secured the bid this past May and expects the summertime event to draw more than 60 teams, 1,200 players and hundreds of Frisbee fans from across Canada.

“Calgary has a legacy of excellence in hosting sporting events and we’re looking forward to making the 2008 Canadian Championships the best yet not only for the players, but also the fans and the Calgary community as a whole,” said 2008 CUC Director Dave McLean. “It’s an exciting spectator event, a chance to promote tourism in Calgary and a true showcase of one of Canada’s fastest growing sports.”

Started in the late 1960s, Ultimate (or Ultimate Frisbee as it is sometimes referred) is a fast-paced, team disc sport, that has developed into an international sport played in more than 50 countries worldwide. Built on a foundation of non-contact plays and self-referring, Ultimate is a unique entity yet combines many familiar elements of sports such as soccer, basketball, football and lacrosse. Athleticism and endurance are keys to the game, while crowds go wild for the signature “layout” catches and defensive blocks. Ultimate’s popularity is on the rise, said McLean.

“In Calgary alone, the sport has gone from one 8-team league to two distinct leagues with a combined roster of nearly 200 teams,” said McLean. “The interest is there, and I think having Calgary host the Championships will be a great draw for getting youth involved and spark a new generation of involvement in our leagues.”

CUC is the national championship for the sport of Ultimate in Canada, and determines which teams will represent Canada at the World Ultimate Championships held every two years. The 2007 tournament will be held in Toronto August 9 – 12, 2007. Calgary’s 2008 tournament is scheduled for August 14 – 17 and will be coordinated by the CUA and a core of local volunteers. Tourism Calgary partnered with the CUA to prepare the bid and will continue to support planning efforts leading up to the event.
