At the end of last year, the Calgary Ultimate community was saddened by the sudden and unexpected loss of one of its own. Michelle Lang, a reporter with the Calgary Herald, was killed while on assignment in Afghanistan when the vehicle she was in hit a roadside bomb. Michelle had been an enthusiastic Ultimate player in our league and her smile and good nature will be missed on the fields, especially by her team, Ivana Huckalot.

On March 13th and 14th, the Calgary Ultimate Association (CUA) would like to honour Michelle’s memory in a way that not only tributes her love of our sport, but also helps a local organization supporting Canadian troops based in Afghanistan.
To recognize Michelle’s passion for journalism and love of ultimate,we’re having a ‘disc-signing’ fundraiser to support the journalism fellowship that’s been set up in Michelle’s name. The CUA is donating all of the discs for this initiative and ALL proceeds collected will go to The Michelle Lang Fellowship for Journalism. That’s part one. Part two of this fundraiser is that all of the discs you sign will be donated to accompany the Canadian troops being deployed to Afghanistan at the end of March. It is our understanding that some of the discs we donate will be given to youth in Afghanistan when the troops are on patrol.

Date: March 13/14 – coincides with Winter League Playoffs
Time: March 13 – 6-9pm, March 14 9-10pm
Location: Calgary West Soccer Centre (11014 Bearspaw Dam Road)
Here's how we'd like you to participate:
- 'Buy a Disc' - you chose your price, but we're oping you'll donate at least $5. These discs will then be donated to the troops being deployed to Afghanistan at the end of March.
- All proceeds from disc 'sales' will got to the Michelle Lang Fellowship for Journalism
